 First Semester Progress

The purpose of my action research plan is to increase physical activity during physical education class by requiring the students to dress in appropriate exercise clothing in order to receive full credit for the class.  This idea came to me after much debate on what we as coaches can do to make our students more healthy and fit.  Also, students that are enrolled in P.E. should not have the option to sit and do nothing and receive credit.  So, I decided to make them suit out or have points taken off their grade.
The first step that I have taken towards my action research plan was a written letter that was provided to all students for their parents, which indicated the new “dress out requirements.”  I noted that if there was a problem to where their child could not dress out for P.E., they could contact me and we could work something out.  However, not a single parent responded in that regard.
Next, I’ve met with my coaching staff to explain the new requirements and made sure that they would assist me in my action research project.  I have asked for their assistance in gauging levels of increased participation and physical activity.  I have full support from the athletic coordinator and coaches, which will make this flow smoothly.  Our first meeting will be held tomorrow after school to determine the level of participation.
I’m looking forward to the results of the first semester in our attempt to make our students more healthy and fit.  This is a very important project in our schools’ eyes in the effort to fight child obesity.
